Q: Do you have to be a farrier to be a member?
A: No, the IPFA welcomes anyone interested in farriery and the welfare of the horse including veterinarians and horse owners.
Q: Does the IPFA license or govern farriers?
A: No, there are currently no licensing requirements for farriers in the State of Iowa except for the race track. The IPFA was established solely to provide educational opportunities for our members to continue their education. Farriers are independent contractors. The IPFA membership is not based on competency, but rather a forum and network to continue education and improve skills at all levels of experience.
Q: Is the IPFA affiliated with a national organization?
A: Yes, the IPFA is State Chapter 35 of the American Farrier’s Association headquartered at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky.
Q: What events are hosted by the IPFA?
A: Standard events of the IPFA are a Spring and Fall Farrier Clinic, Summer Picnic and an Annual Meeting with Elections of Officers. The Association has also supported other events such as Farrier Demonstrations at the Iowa Horse Fair and the Clay County Fair. Members have also conducted member gatherings at local mini-clinics.
